DIY Decor Pillows

Hi there! I’m back with a quick DIY for all of my fellow do-it-yourselfers out there, lol. One thing I’ve grown to dislike more with age is buying decor pillows because they’re always so freaking expensive! Recently, I’ve decided that my next living room will be bohemian-themed along with a mix of other designs, so I was inspired to start working on some decor in my current living room to make the transition a little easier once we relocate. After searching online for some inspiration and taking a quick trip to the dollar store and Hobby Lobby, I was able to create 2 of my own boho-style pillows for under $10 total! Keep reading if you’d like to make some of your own.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 bath mats (for every 1 pillow you’d like to make)
  • Yarn darners needle
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Old pillow or stuffing for pillow

Directions:

I’m not great at written directions, so try your best to keep up with mine. I will try to attach pictures to go along with my directions as well.

First, start by making sure the two mats are lined up with one another to make the sewing process easier.

Knot the thread on the needle and make it tight. I ended up unrolling a ton of yearn to avoid having to start new lines of yarn for each side of the (soon to be) pillow.

Then, begin sewing your desired pattern along the edges until you’re 3/4 done. I did a simple wrap around sewing pattern, but you can do a simple hand stitch look too if you’d like.

Stuff the pillow with whatever filling you choose, making sure you even out the fluff. I used the filling from an old ugly decor pillow.

After stuffing the pillow, finish sewing off your final side to close the pillow completely. You can stop here if you’re satisfied with the look of the pillow, or read below for simple design steps.

For Designs:

Along the front side of the pillow (you can also do the back), thread designs of your liking to create a more store-bought/higher end finish. For my simple lined pattern, I threaded in and out of the pillow, creating a simple boho style along the front and knotted the ends. I then frayed out the ends of the yarn to give it the desired look.

Optional: Create 4 tassels to go at each corner of the pillow. If needed, I can work on a short post on how I create tassels.

Well, that’s it! It took me less than an hour to complete one pillow and once you get the hang of it, I promise it gets easier! Thanks for reading!

Happy decorating,

Toni
