DIY Fall Decor: Bat Cutouts

Ready to get in the spirit of the fall season? This week, I’m sharing one of my favorite fall crafts. Last year, I saw these adorable bats taking over my feed, and I just had to try them for myself. The best part? You can make them yourself with craft supplies you probably already have lying around the house!

Materials
Black paint: Or another dark color like dark brown or deep purple.
Paper: Cardstock or any thicker paper works best to help the bats hold their shape.
Scissors: For cutting out the bat shapes.
Tape or sticky tack: To attach the bats to your walls and surfaces.
String: If you want to hang your bats for a flying effect.

Before you start cutting, you’ll need a template. I simply did a quick search online for “bat cutouts” and found some shapes I liked. I placed a piece of printer paper directly over my computer screen and traced them in various sizes.
Once you have your templates, cut them out. Now, use those templates to cut out as many bats as you need from your stock paper. Using a thicker paper is key here—it gives the bats a sturdy, quality feel and prevents them from curling on the wall.
Finally, paint each bat (front and back) with black paint and let them dry completely.

You’re All Done!

Once your bats are completely dry, it’s time to flatten them out. I like to lay them on a flat surface and place a few heavy books on top for about 10-15 minutes. This ensures they’ll lie perfectly flat against the wall.

Now for the best part—putting your bats up! I’ve found that wrapping paper tape works perfectly for this project. It holds the bats securely without damaging your walls, furniture, or paint.

Fun Ways to Hang Your Bats 🦇

Your bats are ready to be displayed! Here are some fun ideas for creating a spooky-cute mini backdrop:

On the Mantel: Scatter them across your fireplace mantel alongside pumpkins and other fall decor.

Flying Up the Wall: Create the illusion of bats taking flight by arranging them in a trail leading from a corner or a piece of furniture up the wall.

Around a Mirror: Frame a mirror or a picture with bats for an extra-haunting touch.

A Spooky Swarm: Group them together in a large cluster to make it look like a swarm is descending on a door or a window.

The cutest wall decor! I think this could be a fun activity to do with children as well.

Thanks for stopping by! We actually just finished carving our pumpkins last night and I can’t wait to share how they turned out 🥰 Happy Fall, y’all!
