Visiting the Library of Congress in Washington, DC

Location: Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street SE, Washington, DC, 20540
Cost: Entry to the library is free, though you will need to reserve a time slot in advance (online)

I spent an incredible day exploring the Library of Congress. 🏛️ If you’re looking for something free to do in Washington DC, I would highly recommend adding this to your list. It’s a short walk from the Capitol.

There’s beauty in every corner of this place. I found it quite inspiring!

During my visit, I stopped by the Main Reading Room and Thomas Jefferson’s Library. I didn’t know much about the collection beforehand, but after a little research on the Library’s website, I learned a bit more about its history.

Here is what I found: After losing his first library to a fire, Jefferson began collecting again, eventually building a second collection that he sold to Congress in 1815. That sale helped restart the Library of Congress after the original collection was destroyed (during the War of 1812).

Interestingly, Jefferson sold this second library in part to help pay off his personal debts. Allegedly, some books in the collection even include Jefferson’s initials, which he added personally to identify his volumes.

The Main Reading Room looks very cool and I’d love to tour the inside someday. Don’t forget to look up during your visit here, the dome is absolutely stunning! I loved diving into the history and symbolism behind the design here.

Overall, this library has so much to offer and is definitely worth checking out. I’ve included a map below to help you get a better feel for the space, along with a list of the current exhibitions you won’t want to miss.

I hope this has convinced you to visit the Library of Congress during your next visit to Washington DC. Thanks for reading!
